The BizMiner Difference
Bizstats by BizMiner: Data, Limitations and Methodology

BizMiner Data

BizMiner reports are sourced from an array of raw databases, including reporting agencies and government statistical sources, Economic Census and Internal Revenue Service data. None of these raw data sources creates the final measures reflected in BizMiner industry profiles. In total, BizMiner accesses over half a billion sourced data points from eighteen million business operations for each of its twice annual updates. Data in BizMiner Pro Industry Financial and Profit & Loss Profile series may not correspond to similar-sounding industry reports available as Bizstats by BizMiner reports. This is due to difference in time series, industry classification approach, granularity, use of algorithmic projections for detailed lines of business and other segmentation factors.

The overall current coverage of the databases includes data from 12 million business operations annually. While 100% firm coverage is desirable for analytic purposes, the greatest value of the report series rests in discerning patterns of activity, which are reflected in the large samples used to develop the reports. As is the case with any databases this large, some errors are inevitable. Information in the reports is derived from data reported by individual firms. Not all information received is uniform or complete, resulting in the need to develop projection algorithms for specific industry segments and metrics in some report series. No representation is made as to the accuracy of the databases utilized or the results of subsequent analyses. Neither the Brandow Company nor its resellers has undertaken independent primary research to confirm the accuracy of the data utilized in the Profile analyses. Neither the Brandow Company nor its resellers are responsible for conclusions drawn or decisions made based upon this data or analysis. In no event will the Brandow Company or its resellers be liable for any damages, direct, indirect, incidental or consequential resulting from the use of the information contained in BizMiner reports.

BizMiner Methodology

Bizminer uses an industry classification system based on the 4-digit Standard Industrial Classification system. However, our system is much more granular, detailing about 10,000-17,000 lines of business in various report series. This system also allows us to present a much more in-depth level of trend detail than the current NAICS system used by the US and Canadian governments. It is most effective in developing industry trends, snapshots, experience-based forecasts and averages.

Statistics in our reports are always based on firms that identify a particular classification as their primary line of business. Not every business identifies beyond a Major Industry (2-digit) and Detailed Industry (4-digit) classification; not every business selects a more detailed line of business as its primary classification. This is important for researchers assessing market volume, which in our reports is based on businesses primarily in a given classification, and does not include sales data for firms which may operate this type of business as a secondary or tertiary line.

BizMiner’s Industry Financial series and Sole Proprietorship-Startup Profit and Loss series utilize industry-specific base data in conjunction with tested projections and algorithms to create a “typical” analysis for those industry segments for which complete detailed data may not be available. In particular, detailed business segment Industry Financial series asset line items are blended with the closest four digit industry segment. For both Industry Financial and Sole Proprietorship-Startup Profit & Loss series, projections which condition industry specific metrics are applied to expense and liability line item calculations for some highly granular industry segments.

Most industry or business analysis looks at changes in the total industry over time. For example, government data can compare how many firms operated in your industry three years ago and then at some earlier point. The difference between the snapshots is represented as an industry growth pattern. But you're left with no way of understanding the experience of individual firms or areas individual firms or areas like yours -- how many survive, die, grow or decline. BizMiner Profiles fill this critical gap. BizMiner starts with a variety of databases which together contain information on more than 18 million US firms. BizMiner goes back several years and identifies individual firms, business demographic categories, entire industries or areas that fit into your Profile selections. Starting with that "snapshot", BizMiner tracks each firm individually through the databases right up to the current year. Our Market Research Reports, State Market Index, Local Market Vitality series and Risk Index profiles tell you what happened to those original firms. You find out how many can expect to survive or fail, grow or stagnate -- and how much. BizMiner’s methodology lets you compare local and national success and growth rates in any of 17,000 business classifications and in any US area.

Bizstats by BizMiner: Data, Limitations and Methodology

BizStats collects, analyzes, edits and adds value to public data and delivers it without cost in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand format. BizStats by BizMiner reports select and analyze raw (primarily public access) data to develop value-added calculations and useful statistics, and publish the results in a unique, easily accessible format for business owners, valuation professionals, accountants and consultants. The BizStats by BizMiner objective is to add value to, and offer, timely, accurate and insightful public information.

Bizstats data is limited by the constraints of non-projection and public reporting. Privately owned businesses are not required to file public financial reports. Most small businesses fall into this category. While individual company financials are scarce, however, they are on tax returns. By the time it is released to the public, government financial data on small and large business operations lags two to three or more years behind data accessible from private sector databases. Industry classifications are far less granular than those offered by various BizMiner report series.

On the other hand, the information that can be gleaned from government reporting is comprehensive and accurate. All businesses are included and legally pledge that submissions are accurate
